Astonishing Facts That Seem Fake at First Glance

19 Astonishing Facts That Seem Fake at First Glance

Being a scientist is fun, conducting new experiments every day, some of them totally crazy — like counting all the ants on Earth, asking a dolphin to speak on the phone, or watching butterflies in an earthquake.

We at Bright Side know that such experiments can prove incredible facts, so we chose those we considered the best to share with you.

Oxford University is older than the Aztec Empire.

The first students came to Oxford in 1096, while the Aztec city-state of Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325. That means the university is 200 years older.

When we promise something, we make a "pinky promise." This means the one who breaks the vow must cut off their little finger.

The gesture originally came from Japan. When making a promise, children link their little fingers and say a certain vow, different in every culture.

But in fact, during the Edo period (1603–1868), bandit clans had a ritual of cutting off their right little fingers to prove their loyalty. It was only much later that kids turned this tradition into a game.

Jupiter and Saturn have diamond rains.

These two gas giants have real skies of diamonds. Scientists say the pressure inside the giant planets can easily turn carbon into diamonds.

First, lightning transforms methane into carbon, which hardens as it falls down, turning into chunks of graphite after 1,600 km and then into diamonds after an additional 6,000 km.

Myrmecologists worldwide made an estimate that there are 1-10 quadrillion ants living on Earth now. That means there are more than 1 million of these insects for each human, and their total mass is about the same as that of mankind.

The flamingo is a rare bird, but it’s so beautiful that many people would like to see it in their backyard. That’s why there are several times more artificial flamingos worldwide than there are live ones: the latter are counted at 2-3 million, while the number of their plastic counterparts reaches almost 1 billion.

The strawberry is not a berry.

© wikimedia

As a matter of fact, the "berry" of the strawberry isn’t at all its fruit. It’s just an overgrown receptacle that carries the true fruit on it — that’s right, the green and white seeds. You’ll probably need some time to get used to this.

Bananas, though, are berries.

The world has done a barrel roll now. The banana plant is, in fact, giant grass, and bananas are its berries. According to the definition, a berry is a "soft and juicy fruit containing several seeds." Well, bananas are just that.

Pyrosome — a hollow 100-foot worm living in the ocean

© BBC

This creature is called a sea unicorn. They’re so rare that they’ve only been seen a few times. A pyrosome looks like a giant transparent and hollow worm, but it actually consists of thousands of organisms that glow in the dark and replicate themselves. They are believed to be able to grow to the size of a blue whale.

Mithridates VI of Pontus had been taking small doses of various poisons since childhood to work up an immunity to them. During the riot, the Romans wanted to take him hostage, and Mithridates tried to poison himself but couldn’t because of his training. Oh, the irony!

How many hours would a day last for a person who can’t tell the time of day by external signs?

French speleologist Michel Siffre carried out several experiments on the matter, including one from 1964 to 1972. He placed himself in a specially equipped bunker with no light, constant temperature and humidity, and absolute silence. He spent several months like this.

The results showed that his inner clock altered: he needed 36 hours awake and 12 hours of sleep. Later, he conducted similar experiments with other volunteers in a cave — with the same result.

Every dolphin has its own signal name that appears in adolescence and is kept their whole life. It’s known that dolphins can tell their relatives’ signals from all the rest. They’re able to recognize each other with the help of short tone perception. People also recognize their opponents on the phone by voice, so if dolphins could talk on the phone, they would know each other.

You can survive a shark attack by staying still.

Trying to swim away won’t help in this situation. The correct behavior here will be to slowly move away from the shark’s path, and stay calm. Keep an eye on the shark. When it has passed by you, try to find a way out of the water. However, if you can’t and have to defend yourself, hit it on its gills, eyes, or the tip of its nose.

Smallest Countries in the World You Never Knew Existed

Top 10 Smallest Countries in the World You Never Knew Existed

There are more than 200 countries in the world, and we’re sure you’ve heard of each of them at least once. But there are states and territories on our planet we never knew existed. They occupy a super small area, and some of them are inhabited by just a couple of families.

Bright Side has decided to make a list of the top ten tiniest countries with a population smaller than that of a medium-sized city or even a small village.

Palau

© LuxTonnerre/flickr

The Republic of Palau is an island country which consists of more than 300 islands of different sizes. Palau is one of the most amazing places on Earth: its rain forests are full of unique plants and birds, and its territorial waters are inhabited by 130 threatened species of shark. But the most remarkable sight in the country is the lake, with over 2 million jellyfish in it. But don’t worry: over time they’ve completely lost their ability to sting.

Niue

© sandwich/flickr

Niue is a tiny island state in Oceania. Despite the truly amazing views, tourism is not popular there. Therefore, the country depends greatly on foreign aid, especially from New Zealand. The capital city is just a small village with a population of fewer than 600 people. But the island has its own airport and a real supermarket — the one and only in the whole state.

Saint Kitts and Nevis

© Carolyn Sugg/flickr

The state consists of two islands: Saint Kitts and Nevis. One of the main sources of income is the economic citizenship program that allows anyone who has at least $250,000 to invest in the local sugar industry and thus obtain the status of a citizen of St. Kitts. Another way of obtaining citizenship is to purchase a property worth no less than $400,000 on either of the two islands.

The Principality of Hutt River

© wikipedia

The Principality of Hutt River is a micronation located in the province of the same name in Australia. It was founded by Leonard Casley, who declared his farm to be a new and independent state. Although the country isn’t recognized by any state, it still has its own currency, stamps, and passports. In different parts of the principality, tourists can see the busts of His Royal Highness Prince Leonard I of Hutt.

Tuvalu

© Michael Coghlan/flickr

Tuvalu is one of the smallest and poorest countries in the world. The economic situation of the tiny state could be even more disastrous if Tuvalu hadn’t been given the Internet domain .tv, which annually brings millions of dollars to the country’s budget.

Nauru

© wikipedia

Nauru is the smallest independent republic and the smallest island state on our planet. Nauru has neither an official capital nor public transportation system, and 25 miles of its roads are used by locals driving their private vehicles. Environmental problems make the republic very unpopular among tourists. Another "record" of Nauru is the number of obese people: the obesity rate in the country is more than 70%.

The Principality of Seborga

© Principato di Seborga/flickr

This micronation on the territory of Italy is ruled by His Tremendousness Marcello I. The Principality of Seborga is actually a village of the same name near the French border. The unrecognized state has an army that consists of 3 people: the Minister of Defense and two border guards.

The Republic of Molossia

© molossia

The self-proclaimed Republic of Molossia is a micronation founded by Kevin Baugh, located in Nevada, USA. Its population consists of Mr. Baugh himself, his family, 3 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 rabbit. Molossia has its own national anthem, national emblem, and national flag. They even have the death penalty for particularly serious crimes. It issues its own passports and even has a space program. In May 2017, the Republic turned 40.

Sovereign Military Order of Malta

© wikipedia

Apart from Vatican City, there is another tiny state on the territory of Rome, which is called the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Its area is 0.012 sq. km., and it occupies three buildings, two of which are located in Rome and the third one on the island of Malta. The country has its own currency, stamps, website, car numbers, and passports. Its citizens have the right to visa-free entry to several countries around the world. The Sovereign Military Order of Malta is the only country in the world where Latin is the official language.

The Principality of Sealand

© Ryan Lackey/flickr

The unrecognized state of Sealand is a sea platform located 6 miles away from the coast of Great Britain. Sealand is governed by a self-proclaimed Prince Regent, and anyone can become a count, baron, or even a duke: one can buy a noble title for a few hundred British pounds on the state’s website.

Easy Ways to Improve Your Posture (And One More Important Thing!)

10 Easy Ways to Improve Your Posture (And One More Important Thing!)

Correct posture ensures good health, gives you confidence, and helps you look slimmer. However, despite all these benefits, most of us keep stooping, especially when sitting in front of the computer.

We at Bright Side would like to show you 10 simple exercises and tricks that will help make your back straight and keep it that way.

1. The greeting

Put your hands behind your back, and connect your palms as shown in the picture above. It’s important to make a straight line of your arms from one elbow to the other. Your shoulder blades should move to each other. Hold this position for 10 seconds.

2. The lock

Put one arm behind your back. Raise the other one, and put it near the shoulder blades bent at the elbow. Clench your hands in a lock, and pull your upper arm’s elbow up. Change hands after 5 seconds.

3. Twists

Without moving your lower body, put your hands behind your head and turn your upper torso to the left so that your shoulders are at a straight angle with the back of the chair. Hold this position for 5 seconds, and turn right.

4. Bends

Sit at the edge of a chair, and put your arms behind your head. Bend at the spine, and look at the ceiling. Slowly pull your head backward, still looking up, until you touch the back of the chair.

5. The stand

Stand up as shown in the picture. Make sure you feel the wall with both of your shoulder blades, buttocks, and calves. Strain your abs, and breathe deeply in and out several times.

6. The fall

This exercise continues the previous one. While still standing at the wall, spread your arms to the sides and slowly tilt forward without bending your knees. Hold this position for 10 seconds.

1. Holding your abs

The posture is kept by your back and abdominal muscles in equal measure. When you keep your abs strained, your back straightens by itself. A broad belt or a skirt or pants with a high waist will help keep your abdominal muscles in the correct tone.

2. A special pose

Sit on the edge of a chair, stuff one leg under the chair as far as you can, and stretch the other one. This pose will help you sit straight in order to keep your balance. Sit in this position after doing any exercise.

3. Back weight

When you work at a computer, hang something on your back to pull you back, making you keep your spine straight. A simple clothes hanger will do perfectly.

4. Chest weight

When doing house chores, hang a weighted backpack onto your front. Your body will attempt to cope with the weight and pull your shoulders back for balance.

Lastly, all these recommendations are of a short-term variety: they have an almost immediate effect that doesn’t hold for long. For best results, do the exercises above regularly, adding other ones you find.

You should also remember:

Your posture depends not only on your muscles but on the condition of your teeth as well — including the occlusion. Exercises may be insufficient to get rid of a stoop. Pay attention to your dental occlusion, and consult your dentist to solve the problem under professional monitoring.
