best abs exercises of all time

ABS WORKOUTS

The 30 best abs exercises of all time

Your ultimate cheat sheet to getting a ripped six-pack.

By Men's Fitness Editors

Athletes of all sports—from baseball to football to hockey—base their physical training on improving the strength of their core using compound movements. That's great for pro athletes, but what about guys who just want to get a ripped six-pack?

First off, let's acknowledge a hard truth: Not all abs are created equal. Some guys need to work their belly to exhaustion before they can carve out abs, while other dudes seem to get theirs to pop without a single situp.

Regardless of where you fit on the fitness spectrum, effectively training the core comes down to the three planes of motion: frontal, sagittal, and transverse. Doing abs exercises in a circuit style keeps the intensity high and will likely lead to more fat loss.

Ready to get ripped and lose your love handles? These 30 abs exercises will be the last guide you'll ever need.

1 of 30

Ab wheel rollout

Kneel on the floor and hold an ab wheel beneath your shoulders. Brace your abs and roll the wheel forward until you feel you’re about to lose tension in your core and your hips might sag. Roll yourself back to start. Do as many reps as you can with perfect form and end the set when you think you might break form.

2 of 30

Arms-high partial situp

Lie on your back, knees bent at 90 degrees, and raise your arms straight overhead, keeping them pointing up throughout the exercise. Sit up halfway, then steadily return to the floor. That's one rep.

Barbell rollout

Load the bar with 10-pound plates and kneel on the floor behind it. Your shoulders should be over the bar. Brace your abs and roll the bar forward, reaching in front of you until you feel your hips are about to sag. Roll yourself back.

4 of 30

Barbell russian twist

Grasp the bar near the very end again—this time with both hands. Stand with feet at shoulder width. Swing the bar to your left, pivoting your feet as needed, then swing to your right.

5 of 30

Swiss ball crunch

Lie back on the ball with feet shoulder-width apart on the floor. Your lower back should be supported by the ball. Place your hands behind your ears and tuck your chin. Curl your body up off the ball until you’re sitting up.

6 of 30

Dip/leg raise combo

Suspend yourself over the parallel bars at a dip station. Bend your knees slightly and raise your legs in front of you until they’re parallel to the floor. This will build you a magazine-worthy six-pack.

7 of 30

Flutter kick

Lie on your back with legs straight and arms extend out at your sides. Lift your heels about 6 inches off the floor and rapidly kick your feet up and down in a quick, scissor-like motion.

8 of 30

Front squat

Set a barbell on a power rack at about shoulder height (if you don’t have a rack, clean it to your shoulders). Grasp the bar with hands at shoulder width and raise your elbows until your upper arms are parallel to the floor. Take the bar out of the rack and let it rest on your fingertips—as long as your elbows stay up, you’ll be able to balance the bar. Step back and set your feet at shoulder width with toes turned out slightly. Squat as low as you can without losing the arch in your lower back.

9 of 30

Horizontal cable woodchop

Set an adjustable cable pulley to shoulder level (or attach a band to a sturdy object) and grasp the handle with both hands. Stand with feet shoulder width apart, perpendicular to the anchor point, and arms extended, far enough away from the machine so there’s tension on the cable. Twist away from the machine as if you were chopping into a tree. Keep your feet stationary.

10 of 30

Leg raise

Lie on the floor and hold onto a bench or the legs of a heavy chair for support. Keep your legs straight and raise them up until they’re vertical. Lower back down, but stop just short of the floor to keep tension on your abs before the next rep.

11 of 30

Medicine ball russian twist

Sit on the floor in the top position of a situp and, holding a medicine ball with both hands, extend your arms in front of you. Explosively twist your body to one side and then twist back. Alternate sides.

12 of 30

Medicine ball mountain climber

Hold the ball with both hands and get into pushup position on the floor. Drive one knee up to your chest, then quickly drive it back while you raise the opposite knee.

13 of 30

Pike to superman

Get into pushup position with your toes on the ball. Bend your hips and roll the ball toward you so your torso becomes vertical. Roll back so your body is straight again and extend your spine, then roll the ball up your legs so your body forms a straight line with arms extended overhead but hands still on the floor. You should look like Superman flying downward. That’s one rep. Pull with your lats to return to the pushup position and begin the next rep. Here are even more ab moves that use a stability ball.

14 of 30

Plank

Get into pushup position and bend your elbows to lower your forearms to the floor. Hold the position with abs braced.

15 of 30

Hang from a pullup bar with hands outside shoulder width and palms facing away from you. Pull yourself up until your chin is over the bar and then raise your knees to your chest in the top position.

16 of 30

Pushup rocket

Get into pushup position with your feet in the cradles of a suspension trainer and perform explosive pushups so that your hands leave the floor and you can clap in midair.

17 of 30

Resisted reverse crunch

Lie on your back on the floor and wrap the band around the arches of your feet. Cross the ends of the band over each other to make an “X” and grasp the ends with opposite hands. Bend your hips and knees so that your knees are near your chest and then crunch your torso off the floor. Extend your legs while you raise your arms overhead—keep your shoulder blades off the floor. That’s one rep.

18 of 30

Roll out

Rest your forearms on the Swiss ball and extend your legs behind you. Brace your abs and roll the ball forward as you extend your arms and hips. When you feel you’re about to lose tension in your abs, roll yourself back.

19 of 30

Medicinal ball seated knee tuck

Sit on a bench and squeeze the medicine ball between your feet. Extend and elevate your legs out in front of you and extend your torso so that your body forms a straight line. Hold on to the bench for support. Crunch your torso forward and bring your knees to your chest.

20 of 30

Side plank

Lie on your left side resting your left forearm on the floor for support. Raise your hips up so your body forms a straight line and brace your abs—your weight should be on your left forearm and the edge of your left foot. Hold the position with abs braced.

21 of 30

Sprinter

Place your feet in the foot cradles of the suspension trainer and get into pushup position with your hands on the floor. Drive one knee to your chest while the other leg remains extended. Now drive the opposite leg to your chest while you extend the other back. Continue so it looks like you’re running in place.

22 of 30

Situp and throw

Hold a medicine ball with both hands in front of your chest and sit on the floor. Anchor your feet under something sturdy for support, and lie back on the floor a few feet away from a brick or concrete wall. 23 of 30

Star plank

Get into pushup position. Move your arms and feet apart as wide as possible—your body will make a star shape. Hold the position with your torso straight and abs braced for 30 seconds.

24 of 30

Straight leg barbell situp

Lie on the floor holding an empty or lightly loaded bar over your chest as in the top of a bench press.Your legs should be extended on the floor in front of you. Perform a situp, raising your torso until it’s vertical. Keep the bar over your head, so it drifts back to an overhead press position at the top of the situp.

25 of 30

Suitcase deadlift

Load the barbell on the floor and stand to the left of it with feet hip-width apart. Bend your hips back and lower your body until you can grasp the barbell in its center with your right hand. Brace your core and, keeping your lower back in its natural arch, push through your heels to stand up and lock out your hips. Squeeze the bar hard to keep it from teetering. Focus on keeping your spine straight the entire set—do not bend laterally toward the barbell.

26 of 30

Swiss ball plank circle

Place a Swiss ball on the floor and get into pushup position with your hands on it. Now lower your forearms to rest on the ball, keeping your entire body in a straight line with abs braced. magical morning exercises to help you get healthy and energized

Ten magical morning exercises to help you get healthy and energized

Exercise is a great way to get energized in the morning. But if you don’t have time for a full workout, there are still some specially selected exercises you can do to wake up your body and get pumped for the day. Called magical, this training routine includes yoga poses and elements of Qigong practice that will help you to both awaken your body in the morning and get healthier.

Before starting the exercises, it’s vital to ventilate your room and warm up your muscles. The next thing you should do is just follow the instructions.

With permission of the method’s author Sergey Borodin, the Bright Side team is happy to share his amazing 10-minute routine with you. Let’s start!

1. Post with ropes

What it is meant for? Relaxation of hands and shoulder girdle.

How is it done? Imagine that your body is a post and your hands are the ropes tied to it. If someone turns the post sharply, the ropes will wiggle from side to side. This is what you should do. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, relax your hands completely and start rotating your body around the axis of your spine with full weight transfer, gradually increasing exercise intensity.

Duration. Do this exercise for as long as you feel comfortable, but be sure to count the number of breathing cycles (inhale-exhale). Remember, they should be divisible by six. For example, 6, 12, 18, 36 etc.

2. Heron

What it is meant for? Developing agility, balance and coordination and improving blood flow in the legs.

How is it done? Stand on the left leg, lift the right leg so that the thigh is parallel to the ground or even higher. Or you can just bring your leg up as high as you can. Pull your toes towards you. Pull the right arm forward but don’t straighten it fully. Keep the left arm down. The palms should be rounded and relaxed as if holding two balls. Then close your eyes and try to keep your balance. Finally, get up on your toes. Repeat 3-5 times.

Duration. Do this exercise for as long as you feel comfortable, but no less than 10 seconds.

3. Roll

What it is meant for? Strengthening your spine, improving spinal cord blood flow, relieving stress and fatigue.

How is it done? Sit on the floor. Pull your legs towards yourself, clasping them with both hands. Round your back as much as possible. Lean backwards, roll on your back and return to the starting position.

Duration. Do this exercise for several breathing cycles but not less than 12 times.

4. Hummer

What it is meant for? Relaxation of the spine, particularly between the shoulder blades. The exercise should be done together with the "Roll" exercise.

How is it done? Lie down on your back. Put your right hand on your left shoulder and put your left hand on your right shoulder. Round your back as much as possible. Lift your torso and start tapping your back on the floor.

Duration. Do this exercise for several breathing cycles but not less than 12 times.

5. Stretching

What it is meant for? Relief and relaxation. This is a compensation posture which should be performed right after the “Roll“ and ”Hummer" exercises.

How is it done? Lying on your back, cross your fingers and pull your hands up as far away from your shoulders as possible. The toes are pointed.

Duration. Do this exercise for as long as you feel comfortable.

6. Candle

What it is meant for? This exercise helps to improve cerebral blood flow, producing a beneficial effect on your whole body. Regular exercising improves your memory, mental performance and efficiency, reduces the number of hours you sleep and slows your breathing down.

How is it done? Lie down on the floor with your legs extended towards the ceiling. Once in this pose, put your hands on your hips or lower back for support (in the latter case you will be able to lift your legs higher). Point your toes up toward the ceiling. Important: neck muscles should not be tensed.

Duration. Do this exercise for several breathing cycles.

7. Sphinx + Cobra

What it is meant for? The exercise strengthens your back and makes your spine more flexible.

How is it done? Lie down on your stomach. Leaning on your forearms, lift your torso and hold. Keep your forearms parallel to each other. Look forward, lower your shoulders and point your toes. This is “Sphinx.“ Now you need to lift your torso with your hands, arching your back even more and looking forward and upward. This is ”Cobra." Then, come back up to “Sphinx” pose.

Duration. Do this exercise for several breathing cycles.

8. Embryo

What it is meant for? This is a compensation posture; after arching your back, it is necessary to let your spine relax by rounding it as much as you can. This exercise stimulates the digestive organs and prevents the deposition of calcium in the joints.

How is it done? Lower your hips to the heels, keeping the knees together. Lean forward and round your back as far as you can. Wrap your arms around your knees or just stretch forward.

Duration. Do this exercise for several breathing cycles until full relaxation is achieved.

9. Twisting

What it is meant for? This exercise improves your spine’s mobility and flexibility, stretches your muscles and reduces the size of your waist. It’s also a great way to prevent back pain.

How is it done? Sit on the floor with your right leg straight out in front of you. Place your left foot on the ground outside of your right thigh. Turn your torso to the opposite side with your right hand pressed against the floor and your left hand pressed against the knee. Repeat the exercise on the other side. Just remember: the head should be turned in the direction opposite to the twist. This enhances the effect of exercise.

Duration. Do this exercise for as long as you feel comfortable, but don’t forget about breathing cycles.

10. Bends

What it is meant for? The exercise helps to strengthen your spine and lower back muscles and to stretch the tendons.

How is it done? Stand with your feet about double shoulder-width apart. Hold your arms straight out from your sides. Without changing the position of your arms, side-bend to the left. Hold the pose for several breaths and then return to the starting position. Side-bend to the right and hold the pose for the same number of breaths. Now bend forward with your right hand touching your left ankle. Extend your left arm upward and turn your head to look toward it. Hold the pose for several breaths and return to the starting position. Repeat with the other leg. Once finished, you can do a back bend which makes a great compensation for forward and lateral bends.

Duration. Do this exercise for as long as you feel comfortable.

Not only can you do these exercises in the morning, but you can do them during the day as well. This will help you relax and relieve stress. Simple and very useful, this training program deserves to be called magical!
